Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Technical Artist specialized in Shaders and Materials to work on a AAA realistic-style game built entirely in Unreal Engine 5.7.
This role focuses on authoring, extending, and optimizing shader logic using Unreal’s Material System and Custom HLSL, ensuring physically accurate visuals, high performance, and production scalability across large, complex environments.
You will operate at the intersection of Rendering, Art, and Engine, contributing directly to the visual fidelity and technical foundation of the project.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain realistic shaders and material systems in Unreal Engine 5.7.
- Develop Custom HLSL inside Unreal materials for advanced shading logic.
- Build reusable material architectures (master materials, functions, parameterization strategies).
- Ensure strict adherence to physically based rendering (PBR) principles.
- Optimize shaders for GPU performance (instruction count, texture fetches, overdraw).
- Profile and debug shader performance using Unreal’s GPU Visualizer, Shader Complexity, and render stats.
- Collaborate closely with Environment Artists, Character Artists, VFX Artists, and Graphics Engineers.
- Support Nanite-compatible material workflows for large-scale assets.
- Work within Lumen lighting constraints to achieve stable, realistic lighting results.
- Define and enforce material/shader best practices for the art team.
- Review and refactor shaders to maintain consistency, scalability, and performance.
- Mentor junior Technical Artists and provide shader-related technical guidance.
Required Technical Skills
Candidates must demonstrate strong experience with the following:
- Unreal Engine 5.7 Material System
- Custom HLSL within Unreal materials
- Physically Based Rendering (PBR)
- Realistic shading models (surface response, roughness/metallic accuracy)
- Nanite material constraints
- Lumen-compatible materials
- Virtual Texturing
- Material Functions & Master Materials
- Material Instances & parameter-driven workflows
- Shader optimization & GPU profiling
- Real-time rendering pipelines
- Texture memory & streaming considerations
Required Experience
- 5+ years of experience as a Technical Artist, Shader Artist, or Graphics-focused role.
- Proven experience working on AAA or high-fidelity real-time projects.
- Deep understanding of realistic art direction and physically accurate materials.
- Strong communication skills bridging artistic intent and technical implementation.
- Ability to work within performance budgets for PC / Console-class hardware.
Nice to Have
- Experience shipping AAA PC or Console titles.
- Knowledge of post-process materials and screen-space effects.
- Familiarity with rendering theory (BRDFs, lighting models).
- Experience creating internal shader documentation or guidelines.
- Leadership or mentoring experience within a Technical Art team.
