Senior Astro Developer (Web Performance)
Submission deadline: Expired
About the Role
We are looking for a Senior Astro Developer with a performance-first mindset to build and optimize websites that load blazing fast at global scale.
This role goes far beyond UI implementation. You will be responsible for architecting how content is rendered, cached, compressed, and distributed across the edge to achieve near instant page loads, ultra-low TTFB, and excellent Core Web Vitals.
If you care deeply about why a page is fast, not just that it is, this role is for you.
Responsibilities
Architect and develop websites using Astro, leveraging:
- Static-first rendering
- Island architecture
- Partial hydration
Decide what renders where:
- Server vs Edge vs Client
- Pre-rendered vs on-demand rendering
- Streaming vs blocking rendering
Optimize real-world performance metrics:
- TTFB, LCP, CLS, INP
- Lighthouse & Core Web Vitals
Design and implement multi-layer caching strategies:
- Browser cache
- CDN cache
- Edge cache
- Revalidation and stale-while-revalidate patterns
Work deeply with Edge infrastructure:
- Understand PoPs (Points of Presence)
- Request routing and edge locality
- Trade-offs between Edge Compute and Origin
Optimize data delivery:
- HTML vs JSON payloads
- Streaming and incremental data fetching
- Minimizing network round trips
Optimize compression & transport:
- Brotli, Gzip, Zstandard
- HTTP/2, HTTP/3, Early Hints
High-performance edge rendering is meaningless if data access still bottlenecks at a centralized database.
You will be expected to think critically about where data lives and how it is accessed at global scale.
You should be comfortable with:
- Designing data access patterns optimized for Edge environments
- Understanding the trade-offs between: Centralized databases vs globally distributed data stores, strong consistency vs low-latency reads.
- Minimizing origin database hits through: Edge caching, read-through / write-through cache patterns, event-driven revalidation.
Collaborate with backend and infrastructure teams to ensure production-grade performance at scale
Required Qualifications
5+ years of experience in frontend or web performance engineering
Strong expertise in Astro, including:
- Islands Architecture
- Partial Hydration
- Server / Client directives
Deep understanding of web infrastructure and request lifecycle:
- CDN, Edge networks, PoPs
- Cache-Control headers
- Browser to Edge to Origin flow
Strong knowledge of:
- HTTP caching strategies
- Compression & content negotiation
- Preload, prefetch, and resource priority hints
Ability to analyze and act on:
- Network waterfalls
- Browser DevTools performance traces
- Real User Monitoring (RUM) data
Nice to Have
Experience with Edge Functions / Workers
Knowledge of SSR streaming and ISR
Experience optimizing high-traffic or performance-critical websites
Strong system design thinking applied to frontend architecture
Experience with edge-friendly databases, such as: Upstash (Redis / Kafka), Cloudflare D1 / KV, PlanetScale / Neon.
Familiarity with: Serverless & Edge database latency characteristics.
What We Value
You don’t just make things work you make them fast by design
You understand why something is slow, not just how to patch it
You ask the right questions:
- Does this request really need to hit the origin?
- Should this be rendered on the client at all?
- Which cache layer gives us the best payoff?
What We Offer
- Real-world performance challenges (not toy problems)
- Ownership over frontend architecture and caching strategy
- A technically mature team that values correct solutions
- Competitive compensation based on expertise
- Flexible working location and hours
